Annual Report (2024)
With our 65th reunion fast approaching, this year’s report will focus on how things are shaping up on that front. For convenient reference, a copy of the schedule of events is included at the end.
First, as a practical matter, we are striving to make it a memorable occasion while minimizing the cost (to make it affordable as possible). This will be our last major reunion, and the more who attend, the more enriching the experience.
As was planned for the 60th reunion, we will be operating from the DoubleTree Hotel, which is about 4 miles from the Academy. They have graciously credited us with the $500 down payment we gave them for our 60th reunion that was subsequently cancelled. Further, they have held the daily cost of the rooms to only ten dollars more than what we were going to pay five years ago.
As you will note in our soon-to-be-promulgated registration package, rather than charging everyone a flat fee that includes all of the events, we will go ala carte, enabling you to pick and choose according to your preferences.
Finally, we will subsidize part of the total cost from our class treasury, as was planned for our 60th.
So much for costs. Onward to some of the highlights that will make it special:
-
As you may recall from an earlier email, the Navy football team uses the DoubleTree for dinner and rest prior to all home games, so you may run into some of them on Friday or Saturday.
-
For our Memorial Service, Luther Alexander, former Command Chaplain at the Academy, will assist in our tribute to those who have gone before.
-
Happily, the Class of 2010, our Link-in-the-Chain class, purposely chose the same weekend as us to celebrate their 15th Accordingly, we will be linking up with them twice during our reunion, first on Friday immediately prior to the Superintendent’s presentation in Alumni Hall and second at their tailgate prior to the football game. The tailgate will be inside the stadium, so you will need football tickets to get in.
-
If the game starts at 1530 (we won’t know the actual time for another month or so), we will have a bus available on Saturday morning for a short visit to the Student Athlete Center. It’s an impressive facility that is already serving as an important recruiting tool for Navy sports.
-
Special seating will be provided at the Parade for all hands out of Sixty. Following the parade, there will be a reception at the Superintendent’s Quarters for those in the class who made Flag rank and for the current class officers. Sorry it doesn’t include everyone, but that decision was out of our hands.
-
The Battalion dinners will take place that same evening. Bob Osmon, our Class VP, is coordinating these dinners and has thus far facilitated arrangements for half of the battalions. Making this happen is akin to herding cats, so to the extent you are able, please assist Oz in putting this together, either at the battalion or the company level.
-
Yet another highlight of our time together will be the class dinner (or lunch) at the new Alumni Association and Foundation Center, more commonly referred to as the Fluegel Center. Following the meal, we will have a short class meeting to announce the new class officers and express our gratitude to others who have been tirelessly serving the class in important ways.
-
Finally, the frosting on the cake will be the opportunity to enjoy brunch with the Mids on Sunday morning in the Mess Hall.
